The Spiritual Aspect of our Personality

There are four important aspects to each individual’s personality - the physical personality, the mental (intellectual) personality, the social personality and the spiritual personality. As individuals each one of us is unique and different from the other whether it is in our physical looks, thoughts or actions.

Many a times, I have observed little children playing in the park. Sometimes I see their parents sitting on a bench close by and looking adoringly towards their child and I wonder to myself - are they feeling pleased because they feel their child is the competent one amongst the other children? Are they admiring his physical, mental or social qualities or are they admiring the jewel like qualities of compassion, forbearance, generosity, humility and tolerance in their child. It is our thoughts and actions that not only reflect our personality but go a long way in influencing the personality of our children. As parents we are building great cathedrals that might not be seen by others but we ourselves can see the result of what we have built. It thus becomes of utmost importance that parents inculcate well-grounded values in their children, which enables them to evolve and grow up as better human beings. Perhaps, the children are too young to fully comprehend the concept of spirituality, the elders can gently guide the children towards positive emotions and contribute greatly in helping the child develop a sense of self- worth.

Spiritually evolved people remain connected with a sense of universal oneness. This enables them to respond to trying situations and issues in a remarkably composed manner. Spiritually evolved people will enjoy every moment of their life, even if life brings unexpected downfalls or challenges. They will not treat their problems as an obstruction but as an opportunity that will foster their growth as an individual. The unpleasant memories of the past will not become such convictions that will bind and restrict their freedom to evolve and grow.

Because the spiritual aspect of our personality is so profoundly bound with all aspects of human identity, it helps us realize that peace and happiness is our ultimate goal. In today's fast paced world, despair and dejection are one of the most common negative emotions that we have to face. These emotions arise as a result of our own judgmental approach towards life. At moments like these, we realize the need to turn to spirituality for direction. Spiritually evolved individuals understand that spiritual love does not mean a special feeling for one or two people , it is a universal feeling of belonging , an openness of heart , a generosity of spirit and of positive emotions like respect , tolerance , forgiveness , compassion and flexibility. One realizes that relationships are meant to aid the search for one’s true self. Ultimately, it is the mind that has to be directed towards realizing and being receptive to understanding the path to peace and happiness.

Educational authorities deem it impossible to teach spiritual principles in public schools because they confuse these values with a variety of conflicting forms of religious faiths. If these educational institutes concentrate on the universal principles of peace, love, happiness, tolerance and faith that govern our spiritual personality, they will be able to devise methods of practically inculcating these emotions in the mind of the children.

Let us all pause for a moment, stop and think.........in today's rat race for money, position and power, are we neglecting the development of the spiritual aspect of our personality????It is our wish to learn and develop immunity of the spirit that will help us to protect our heart, mind and soul from negativity that causes irreplaceable damage to us and those around us.

  1. Greetings and best wishes for the new year!
I enjoyed reading your thoughts in the blog. While schools, particularly in India, are becoming less and less involved in inculcating values in students, it is important that parents are empowered with knowledge, and society encourages them to infuse such values in their children. I feel the society is truly at a turning point.

    Thanks for addressing this issue.

  2. Different societies all over the world have different issues which they feel should be addressed first. But as you mentioned, people are increasingly realizing the need to gain knowledge for a healthier and happy human existence.

Thank you for your encouraging words.
